Vuelta a Espana 2011

movistar cycling vuelta a espana 2011

Movistar finished the 2011 Vuelta Espana with 4 riders of the 9 starters finishing in Madrid with Pablo Lastras, Marzio Bruseghin, Beñat Intxausti and Imanol Erviti completing the grand tour. During stage 17 Movistar riders contracted a stomach virus  were David López, Sergio Pardilla, Ignatas Konovalovas and Ángel Madrazo  had to abandon the tour due to sickness and fatigue. Considering that more that half the cycling team did not complete the last 4 stages of the The Vuelta a Espana, the telephone squad won stage 3 with Pablo Lastras sprint win and had riders in the top 10 under a minute in the general classification most of the tour, this grand tour was a bitter-sweet experience for the riders and management.

Stage 4  Baza – Sierra Nevada 172 km

Distance:  170.2km   Highest point: 2,130m  Category: Mountains

Pablo Lastras lost the red jersey in stage 4 of the 2011 Vuelta Espana but rode a great ride that featured a couple of top mountain climbs. A 4 rider breakaway paced themselves up the 2,200 m to Sierra Nevada, won by Daniel Moreno. Today’s stage was dedicated to Movistar rider Xavier Tondo whom left the “peloton” back in May. Since his passing was on a rest-day, and team time trial the following day of the Giro D’ Italia.
Pablo Lastras is a team player:“Yesterday I was thinking of not defending the leadership, because I had come to the Vuelta to win stages, but this morning we were focused on keeping it and that’s how we raced all day. When I dropped, I saw that there were still 40 or 50 riders into the bunch and I was off to my limit. It was better to save energy for the opportunities that will surely come ahead. As well the team as myself are not getting enough after yesterday’s victory.”
